ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A catalyst is disclosed which is suitable for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide which comprises a diatomaceous earth support which is mixed with vanadium compounds, promoters and activators and shaped. The diatomaceous earth which is employed contains at least 40% by weight of calcined diatomaceous earth of Melosira granulata diatoms which have been calcined at a temperature of from about 960°F. to about 1850°F.
