A liquid crystal display is traditionally optimized for viewing at wide angles in normal lighting conditions. This renders the information being viewed open to all within those viewing parameters. By removing the uppermost polarizing film layer that information becomes invisible to the casual observer and visible only to parties equipped with an external polarized viewing filter. This gives added viewing security in sensitive viewing situations (such as handheld computer use and automated teller machine use).
