A low temperature limit for battery powered thermostats for energizing and de- energizing the heating system when the bat- tery (15) can no longer operate the thermostat (1). The thermostat (1) comprises a battery powered thermostat control (10) for en- ergizing and de-energizing the heating system and a low temperature limit (24) electrically connected in parallel with the battery powered thermostat control (10). The battery powered thermostat control (10) disables a controllable switch (20) and, thereby, the low temperature limit bimetal switch (24) when the battery is charged. When the battery (15) is discharged, it enables the low tem- perature bimetal switch limit (24). Thereby, when the thermostat is no longer operational, the low temperature limit (24) energizes the heating system when the ambient temperature present on the thermostat (1) is below a preselected temperature.
