An improved active spall suppression armor is disclosed which includes at least a primary spall backing plate which contacts the inner wall of the armor. The backing plate material is formed as a polymeric matrix having metal or ceramic powders therein which form particles of low mass, low kinetic energy and low penetration capability when the outer surface of the armor is contacted by the type of weapon which the spall backing material is designed to protect. A secondary spall backing plate may be spaced from the primary plate for reducing the angle of dispersement from fragments released from the armor and the weapon.
