ABSTRACT The actuating device (20) serves, in particular, to actuate a sliding gate valve (15) on a metallurgical vessel (10) in which the actuator, which is conventionally constructed as a piston/cylinder unit (24), is laterally arranged on the vessel (10) for space reasons. This actuating device (20) has a deflecting element (22) which is rotatably mounted on the vessel (10) and which connects the drive rod (24) of the piston/cylinder unit (24) with that of the sliding gate valve (15). Provided for the drive rod (21) of the sliding gate valve (15) is a guide element (30) which engages approximately at its end and with which this drive rod (21) is held over the entire stroke. Preferably this guide element (30) is secured independently of the sliding gate valve to the vessel (10) and has a steering arm (31) and a connecting arm (32), the steering arm (31) being rotatably mounted on the one hand on the end of the drive rod and on the other hand on the connecting arm (32) and the latter is pivotally mounted on the vessel (10). The transverse forces acting from the actuator on the drive rod (21) of the sliding gate valve are thus optimally accommodated and operational disruptions, which led previously to bearing wear in bearings provided in sliding gate valve housings, may be completely eliminated.
