Abstract: An actuating mechanism comprises a lower housing portion (10) and an upper housing portion (12). The lower housing portion (10) is cup-shaped and receives the mounting plate (48) into which a thermostatically working element (46) together with a heating coil (50) is inserted. The lower housing portion (10) comprises contact lamellas (30, 32) which are shielded by an insulating plate (38). Cut-outs (42, 56) within the insulating plate (38) allow penetration of a working piston (44) of the working element (46) and of contact pins (54) within the mounting plate (48) during assembly of both housing portions (10, 12), whereat the contact pins (54) are contacting the contact lamellas (30, 32) so that the heating coil (50) only in the assembled condition of the actuating mechanism is supplied with a voltage. A compression spring (58) serves as an abutment for the mounting plate (48). By means of the compression spring (58) the working element (46) is protected against overload. If the pushing force of the working piston (44) exceeds the biasing force of the compression spring (58), the mounting plate (48) is shifted against the compression spring, and the contact pins (54) lift off from the contact lamellas (30, 32) so that the electrical circuit is disconnected (Fig. 1a).
