ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An actuator including a single acting piston and cylinder and particularly for opening and closing a fluid flow control valve. The actuator has a piston rod carrying the piston movable by fluid pressure applied to the cylinder and arranged to be connected to a member to be actuated, for example a valve member. The actuator also includes a pre-loaded spring assembly mounted on the piston rod, whereby when the piston has been moved by the application of fluid pressure to the cylinder into one of its end positions, the spring assembly will be compressed against one of a pair of fixed end abutments and spaced from the other and when the fluid pressure has been subsequently removed or the fluid pressure has fallen sufficiently, the piston will be moved by the spring assembly to the other of its end positions. The spring assembly is removable from the piston rod and is invertable, thereby to select one or other of the fixed abutments with which said one end of the spring assembly is engageable and hence the direction in which the actuator will operate in a fail-safe manner.
