The present invention is directed to acyl and sulfonyl derivatives of 6,9- disubstituted 2-(trans-1,4-diaminocyclohexyl)-purines of the formula (see formula below) wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of -S(O)2- and -C(O)-, and methods of using the same as antiproliferative agents or to prevent apoptosis.
