ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Aromatics are acylated by a Friedel-Crafts method using AlCl3 or AlBr3 as a catalyst. The acylation is carried out in the additionnal presence of metalalkyls or metalalkyl halides of metals or semimetals of main groups two to five and/or of metals of subgroups two or four of the Periodic Table. The addition of organometallic compounds results in binding of the hydrogen chloride present or formed in the reaction mixture, and causes suppression of side reactions by interaction of AlCl3 and hydrogen chloride, thereby giving aromatic ketones in high yield.
