AN ADAPTABLE FILTERING ENCLOSURE ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION when an emergency spillage or leakage of liquid pollutants occurs there is one question that is paramount to all that have an interest in the occurrence. That question is -- do we have the immediate capability to clean up the contaminants quickly and effectively. The adaptable filtering enclosures of the inven- tion are both innovative and practical in that under emergency conditions the only tools required for their installation and manufacture are a knife and wire or rope ties. The filters are formed from thin, open mesh tub- ular flexible sheathing, having two open ends. The flexible sheathing serves as an outer filtering skin in which may be placed an inner core of filtration media, preferably sorptive granular coal. In use the filtering enclosures are loosely filled to provide body and strength to the filter while all- owing a desired flexibility therein. The built-in flexibility allows the movement of the coal granules exposing new sorptive surface areas thereby when the filter is repositioned during use. The filtering enclosures are shaped by the amount of sorptive granular coal placed therein and by the method of closure of the two open ends.
