A system is disclosed for reproducing a luminance signal from a medium containing a previously recorded reduced level luminance signal. The system includes a circuit for recovering the reduced level luminance signal from the medium. A circuit cores a high frequency portion of the reduced level luminance signal. The level of the cored high frequency portion is then boosted by a predetermined amount to produce the luminance signal. In addition, a system for recording a luminance signal on and playing back said luminance signal from a recording medium is disclosed. The system includes an adaptive deemphasis circuit for adaptively reducing the level of a high frequency portion of the luminance signal. A record circuit records the reduced level luminance signal on the medium. A playback circuit reproduces the reduced level luminance signal from the medium. A reemphasis circuit non-adaptively boosts the level of the high frequency portion of the reduced level luminance signal to produce the luminance signal.
