A method of setting the appropriate hysteresis for cells in a wireless telecommunication network in order to reduce the rate of oscillating handoffs arising from a routine mobile station handoff from an originating cell to a neighboring cell. The method includes measuring the received signal strength in the originating cell and the received signal strength of at least one neighboring cell. The hysteresis is calculated by applying a statistical operation, such as the standard deviation, to at least one of the received signal strengths. Alternatively, the hysteresis calculation may include the handoff oscillation rate. The calculated hysteresis value may be presented to the operator for manual adjustment or may be input into self-configuring cells for the dynamic adjustment of hysteresis levels to improve the network operating performance.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de régler l'hystérèse appropriée aux cellules d'un réseau de radiotélécommunication afin de réduire le taux de transferts oscillants résultant d'un transfert normal de la cellule d'origine à une cellule voisine par une station mobile. Le procédé consiste à mesurer la puissance des signaux reçus dans la cellule d'origine et la puissance des signaux reçus d'au moins une cellule voisine. On calcule l'hystérèse en appliquant une opération statistique, telle que la déviation standard, à au moins une des puissances de signaux reçus. En variante, le calcul de l'hystérèse peut comporter le taux d'oscillation de transfert. Afin d'améliorer les performances du réseau, la valeur hystérèse calculée peut être soumise à l'opérateur pour ajustement manuel ou bien entrée dans des cellules auto-configurantes pour l'ajustement dynamique des niveaux d'hystérèse.
