ABSTRACT A ring communications system includes a unidirectional ring signal path having a plurality of terminals coupled in series along the ring. A plurality of the terminals include an elastic storage buffer adapted to couple data received from the next upstream terminal to the next downstream terminal at an output bit rate related to the average number of data bits in the storage buffer.
