ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a method for preventing a low hydrogen overvoltage cathode from degradation characterized by adding a reducing agent to the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell which is used in the electrolysis of an aqueous alkali metal halide solution, the reducing agent being added during shutdown of the cell and in an amount of at least 0.01 equivalent per sq. meter of the cathode. Accordingly to the invention, no degradation takes place even after repeated shutdowns.
