36-SP-1187 ADDITIVE FOR DECREASING VARISTOR VOLTAGE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An additive for reducing the varistor voltage of a metal oxide varistor is described. Nuclei having a grain size between about .5 and 20 microns are added to the varistor mixture in an amount between about .1 and 20% by weight. The nuclei have the metal oxide and additives present therein in substantially the same proportions as in the remainder of the varistor mixture. A method for making a low voltage varistor employing such nuclei is described. The nuclei may be obtained by pulverizing and classifying a small number of sintered varistor bodies having essentially the desired constituents but not necessarily the desired low varistor voltage.
