ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An additive for water is disclosed which is useful in fire fighting. The additive contains a strongly swelling water-insoluble high molecular weight polymer as a gelatinizing agent coated with a water soluble release agent of the kind that does not cause the particles of the gelatinizing agent to swell. The release agent protects the gelatinizing agent from becoming sticky upon penetration of water and thus from agglutinating.
