ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A water treatment mineral bed including small, smooth water treatment mineral particles and about 5% to about 50% by weight of the water treatment mineral bed of an additive, the additive comprising a granular abrasive, the granules of the abrasive having an abrasiveness in excess of that of the water treatment mineral particles, whereby during backwashing of the mineral bed the abrasive facilitates removal of foreign matter and regeneration of the water treatment mineral particles.
