ABSTRACT A process fro preparing oxazolines and compositions thereof with metal salts, which comprises reacting a substantially saturated hydrocarbyl-substituted C4-C10 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride or ester thereof having at least 50 carbon atoms in said hydrocarbyl group with a 2,2-disubstituted-2-amino-1-alkanol having 2 to 3 hydroxy groups and contain- ing a total of 4 to 8 carbon atoms of the formula Image wherein 5 is alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, said alkyl groups having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and at least one of said X is a hydroxyalkyl group of the structure -(CH2)nOH where n is 1 to 3, said reaction being carried out in the presence of a small amount of a metal salt. The products of the process are useful additives in oleaginous compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubri- canting oil or gasoline. The presence of metal salts particularly zinc in the compositions can contribute performance benefits thereto.
