ABSTRACT Improved adhesive polymers based on monovinylidene aromatic and conjugated diene monomers (e.g. styrene and butadiene) are prepared using a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and itaconic acid to provide improved combinations of shear strength and tack. Itaconic acid is used in the range of 0.5 to 5 percent by weight and the hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate in the range of 1.5 to 17 weight percent. Hydroxyethyl acrylate is a preferred hydroxyalkyl [meth)acrylate compound.
