An adiabatic integrated water gas shift - carbon dioxide removal system is disclosed comprising a quench unit configured to receive a fluid stream of syngas from an external syngas source, a first and a second heat exchanger, an integrated water gas shift reactor comprising at least a membrane which is configured to selectively remove CO2 from the reaction mixture, a cooling loop for directing the cooling fluid from the integrated water gas shift reactor to the second heat exchanger and after heat exchange back to integrated WGS-CO2 removal reactor.
