ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A method for optimizing a staged combustion process in a furnace, preferably a boiler furnace, having at least one burner, optionally a radiant superheater, and at least one air injector located above the burner but under the radiant superheater whenever present. The method comprises the steps of injecting air in-to the furnace through the air injector(s) after primary combustion of fuel with air in the burner(s) measuring the amount of unburned fuel, the amount of nitrogen oxides and the super heated steam temperature above the air injector(s) comparing the measure amounts and temperature with predetermined values corresponding to an optimum NOx reduction; and adjusting the air injection flow rate, velocity and direction through the air injector(s) until the measured amounts and temperature meet the predetermined values. A furnace is also disclosed, for use to carry out this method.
