The anti-splitting device (10) of the present invention has a central web portion (14) and a pair of end web portions (16, 18), which are joined adjacent to their midpoints to opposite ends of the central web portion (14) to provide the device with generally I-shaped cross-sectional configurations. The web portions have first side edges (14b, 16b, 18b) tapered to define a cutting edge and second side edges (14b, 16b, 18b) serving to define a planar driven surface (26) disposed parallel to the cutting edge. And on the central web portion (14) are at least two projections (20, 22) to upstand from driven surface. The projections (20, 22) are adapted to removably attach the device (10) to a driver employed to insert the device into a log. The driver (12) of the present invention is preferably in the from of a manually operational hammer having a planar driver surface (38) of circular plan from configuration and a circular groove (40) that has a n outer diameter equidistant and an inner diameter equidistant from a given fixed point, the center of the planar driving surface (38). The groove (40) receives the projections (20, 22) and contacts a predetermined portion of the projections; the projections exert a force on either the outer diameter or the inner diameter, and do not contact both diameters at the same time. The device can then be freely rotated in the groove to obtain a desired position on the driver surface. Thus, the device can be driven into the end of a log upon swinging of the driver, and the projections will not remain in the groove, if they happen to break off.
L'invention concerne un dispositif anti-fissures (10) qui comporte une partie d'âme centrale (14) et une paire d'extrémités d'âme (16, 18) qui sont assemblées par leur point central à des extrémités opposées de la partie centrale d'âme (14) afin de fournir au dispositif des configurations transversales généralement en forme de I. Les parties d'âme présentent des premiers bords latéraux effilés pour définir un bord tranchant et des seconds bords latéraux (14b, 16b, 18b) servant à définir une surface entraînée plane (26) placée parallèlement au bord tranchant. Sur la partie d'âme centrale (14) figurent deux projections (20, 22) saillant de la surface entraînée. Les projections (20, 22) sont conçues pour fixer de façon amovible le dispositif (10) à un organe d'entraînement servant à introduire le dispositif dans une bille. L'organe d'entraînement (12) est de préférence un marteau à opération manuelle doté d'une surface d'entraînement plane (38) de configuration circulaire plane et une encoche circulaire (40) dotée d'un diamètre extérieur et d'un diamètre intérieur équidistants par rapport à un point fixe donné, le centre de la surface d'entraînement plane (38). L'encoche (40) reçoit les projections (20, 22) et vient au contact d'une partie prédéterminée de celles-ci. Ces dernières exercent une force sur le diamètre extérieur ou le diamètre intérieur et ne touchent pas les deux diamètres à la fois. Le dispositif peut alors être librement pivoté dans l'encoche pour adopter une position souhaitée sur la surface de l'organe d'entraînement. Le dispositif peut ainsi être introduit dans l'extrémité d'une bille lors du balancement de l'organe d'entraînement, et les projections, en cas de cassure, ne demeurent pas dans l'encoche.
