An adjustable backrest has a semi-rigid upright spine and a plurality of support arms and a plurality of attachment arms extending laterally from either side thereof, said arms being removably attachable to said spine at adjustable locations thereon. The support arms are adjustably curved laterally and forwardly and the attachment arms are adapted to fasten to the frame of a wheelchair and the like.
