A web coater is provided with a doctor blade (17) having an active edge (18) or tip engaging the web (10) at a predeter- mined position. The force applied by such active edge is adjust- ed by movement of jaws (31) gripping the opposite edge of the blade. The jaws are moved along a curve empirically esta- blished to maintain the active edge of the blade (17) in a prede- termined fixed position during the adjustment. The angle of in- cidence of the active edge (18) of the blade (17) relative to the web (10) is also maintained constant by pivoting a blade sup- porting frame (16) about an axis coincident with the active edge (18). A controller (34) is supplied with empirically esta- blished data developed by utilizing test blades to establish pol- ynomial formulas having constants corresponding to each of the various blades intended to be used by the coater. The con- troller (34) also automatically compensates for blade wear.
