This invention is a modular blood filter device, and delivery system (10) comprising a hollow vessel insertion device (20) with a modular filter apparatus (40). The insertion device (20), which can be an introduces, includes a distal end (24) adapted to enter an artery, and a proximal end adapted to receive a modular filter apparatus (40). When the insertion device (20) is a cannula, the modular filter apparatus (40) is received through a side port (32). The modular filter apparatus (40) includes a shaft (62), an adjustable filter device or a removable filter (70) which includes a filter mesh (80), an adjustable frame (72), and a sizing mechanism (74).
