ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An adjustable drop nipple is disclosed for connecting a fire extinguishing sprinkler at the underside of a room ceiling with a nipple in water distirbuting piping above the room ceiling. The adjustable drop nipple has a sealing coupling engaging said nipple and an elongated sleeve on the exterior of said sealing coupling extends toward said distributing piping and partially overlies the nipple, a tube is telescopically positioned in the sealing coupling and nipple and extends outwardly of the end of said sealing coupling opposite said nipple, a tapered surface is formed in said sealing coupling and a rotatable lock nut on the sealing coupling through which said tube extends encloses a split ring movable toward and away from said tapered surface upon rotation of said rotatable lock nut, the split ring is arranged for wedging action between said tube and said tapered surface of said coupling. A resilient seal in the sealing coupling engages the tube. This invention distinguishes from other inventions by reason of the arrangement of the telescopic tube within the sealing coupling which prevents the tube moving upwardly into blocking position in the distributing piping, also the tapered surface on the sealing coupling is positioned to receive the split ring and thereby lock the respective parts mechanically separately from the sealing coupling. The present invention may therefore be adjusted lengthwise while containing water without leakage or the heretofore necessity of drawing the distributing piping. -2-
