An adjustable support for a backrest or other furniture element includes a housing for mounting in a base such as a sofa, longitudinally extending grooves in the housing, a barrel rotatable in the housing having opposed windows, latches radially slidable in the windows having longitudinally extending ridges for mating with the grooves in the housing, resilient bands extending around the barrel and latches for biasing the latches inwardly so that the barrel can be rotated in the housing, and a post carrying the furniture element slidable in the barrel for forcing the latches outwardly to a latched position.
