ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A handle and guide shaft for a floor maintenance appliances comprises two telescoping tube portions, two cap members, one in the inner tube and one around the outer tube, the two caps extending beyond the respective ends of the tube portions and an actuating member in the cap in the inner tube and plungers extending in openings in said inner cap and said inner tube portion which are movable on said inner cap through said openings to lock and unlock the tube portions in response to the movement of the actuating member. -1-
