ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A prefabricated adjustable mantel is provided for a so-called "zero-clearance" fireplace having a pair of metal pedestals and a metal cross-member defining a firebox opening. The mantel includes four essential elements. The first two elements are constituted by a pair of upright members adapted to be disposed vertically in spaced-apart relationship at the space-apart vertical edges of the firebox opening. Each of the upright members comprises a generally rectangular, preferably fireproof, backing sheet having two distinct zones. The first zone is a major vertical zone of less than but substantially the entire height thereof, which bears a facing of a decorative material thereon (e.g. brick). The second zone is also of less than but substantially the entire height thereof and has a decorative vertical post attached thereto. A horizontal alot is provided which extends horizontally within an upper zone thereof. The third element is a centerpiece includes a preferably fireproof backing sheet having a length equal to the maximum width of the firebox opening and a width not greater than the width of the metal cross-member. The centerpiece backing sheet has a vertical zone bearing a facing of a decorative material (e.g. brick) extending substantially the entire width thereof, with the backing sheet having a length not less than the width of the firebox opening. The final element is top mantel piece adapted to rest atop the upright members. The top mantel piece includes a rear pocket for accommodating the upper zone of the upright members, and a variable, selected amount of the centerpiece. The top mantel piece includes a pair of bolt means adapted to extend therethrough and through the slots in the upright members for securing the mantel piece to the fireplace wall. This enables the assembly of a mantel which is adjustable to any size of fireplace and which can be placed against the metal of the fireplace without fear of combustion of the mantel.
