A positioning housing assembly, for an infra-red thermocouple sensor of the type having a generally cylindrical sensor case with a sensing face at one axial end thereof and one or more electrical conductors at the other end thereof, includes a cylindrical housing member having a central bore that telescopically receives a sensor case. A frusto-conical reflective surface, having a mirror-like finish, at one end of the housing, concentrates infra-red rays toward the sensing face of the inserted sensor. The frusto-conical surface may be formed integrally with the housing or it may be carraied by a separable adapter that telescopically couples with the sensing end of the housing. A separable handle attaches to the end of the housing remote form the sensing face, and includes a conductor conduit for guiding conductors away from a sensor within the housing to the exterior of the housing. The housing further includes a set screw movable to clamp the sensor within the central bore. Positioning legs extend axially from the housing near the sensing end, to control the distance between the sensing face of the sensor and a test surfacethat is being monitored by the sensor. The axial extent of the positioning legs may be adjusted by moving the legs axially relative to the housing; in one embodiment the legs are attached to a positioning bracket that is slidably movable relative to the housing, while in another embodiment the legs slide within axially aligned bores formed directly in anintegral portion of the housing. Clamping screws are provided for locking the legs or the movable bracket in position relative to the housing. In a further improvement of the invention, the reference surfaces at the free ends of the positioning legs may be rotable rollers, for facilitating movement of the housing assembly from place to place along a surface that is being monitored. Calibration marks on the housing or on the legs further facilitate accurate and reproducible positioning of the legs relative to the housing.
