An adjustable saddle has a pommel with ends extending from side to side at a front portion of the saddle. The surface of each end of the pommel is connected to a first plate with a second plate hinged to the first plate to form a cooperating pair of plates. The hinge is disposed along the upper edges of the plates and allows the plates to move between closed and open positions. Adjustment means are included on opposite lateral sides of the saddle tree to move the cooperating plates between closed and open positions. The saddle includes bars extending from the underside of the saddle tree which each have a flat side secured to an exposed surface of each second plate. When the saddle is mounted on a horse the bars can be adjusted for optimal fit without causing discomfort to the horse.
