A shaft seal device is provided herein for use with a drive shaft extending through an opening in the hull or bulkhead of a vessel to preclude the flow of fluid into the vessel and out of the confines of such device. The shaft is rotatable about a generally-linear axis and has a seal ring mounted on the shaft for rotation with the shaft. The seal ring has a seal ring seal surface. The device has a passageway with a central, longitudinal axis for receiving the shaft for rotation. The device includes adapter means, comprising a part of the passageway, the adapter means having an aft end portion which is fixable to a connector for attaching the shaft seal device to said hull or the bulkhead of the vessel through which the shaft extends. The device further includes slide ring means having part of the passageway and connected to the adapter means, the slide ring means being stationary in the axial direction with respect to the adapter means. The device further includes diaphragm means having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being disposed between, and forming a watertight seal between, the adapter means and the slide ring means. The device further includes friction ring means having part of the passageway, the friction ring means having one portion operatively connected with the second portion of the diaphragm means in a watertight seal, and having a second portion having a friction ring seal surface around the longitudinal axis of the passageway and positioned and configured to engage the seal ring seal surface to create a generally-watertight seal. The device further includes biasing means cooperating with the slide ring means for aligning the friction ring means with the drive shaft, and for urging the friction ring means and the friction ring seal surface towards the seal ring means and the seal ring seal surface to maintain a generally-watertight seal despite fore and aft movement of the shaft and despite transverse movement of the shaft relative to the longitudinal axis of the passageway.
