A chair (10) is provided having at least one arm rest (20) which may be laterally adjusted in order to adjust the width between the opposing arm rests (20, 20) and accommodate different size users. The arm rest is attached to the chair arm (16) for lateral movement inboard and outboard of the chair arm. The arm rest is also attached to the chair arm for pivotable movement between a locked position wherein a latch (32b) attached to one of the arm rest or the chair arm latchedly engages the other of the arm rest or thechair arm for selectively locking the arm rest in the desired lateral position and an unlocked position for permitting the arm rest to be laterally adjusted. In one embodiment, the arm rest has a latch mechanism (22) which comprises a lower bracket (34) rigidly attached to the chair arm and an upper bracket (36) slidably and pivotably attached to the lower bracket so that the upper bracket pivots between the locked and unlocked positions and may move in the lateral direction relative to the lower bracket in the unlocked portion. The arm rest is attached to the upper bracket so that the arm rest may slide in the lateral direction or pivot between the locked and unlocked positions in cooperation with the upper bracket.
Fauteuil (10) doté d'au moins un accoudoir (20) qui peut être réglé latéralement afin de régler l'écartement entre les accoudoirs opposés (20, 20), de manière à s'adapter à des utilisateurs de corpulence différente. Ledit accoudoir est fixé au bras (16) du fauteuil de façon à permettre le mouvement latéral vers l'intérieur et vers l'extérieur par rapport au bras du fauteuil. L'accoudoir est également fixé au bras du fauteuil de manière à pivoter entre une position bloquée dans laquelle un cliquet (32b) attaché à l'un des accoudoirs ou au bras du fauteuil s'emboîte dans l'autre accoudoir ou dans le bras du fauteuil afin de bloquer sélectivement l'accoudoir dans la position latérale désirée, et une position débloquée permettant de régler latéralement l'accoudoir. Dans un mode de réalisation, ledit accoudoir possède un mécanisme d'encliquetage (22) qui comporte une plaque de fixation (34) inférieure fixée à demeure au bras du fauteuil et une plaque de fixation (36) supérieure fixée coulissante et pivotante à la plaque de fixation inférieure, si bien que la plaque de fixation supérieure pivote entre les positions bloquée et débloquée et peut, en position débloquée, se déplacer latéralement par rapport à la plaque de fixation inférieure. L'accoudoir est fixé sur la plaque de fixation supérieure, si bien qu'il peut coulisser latéralement ou pivoter entre les positions bloquée et débloquée en combinaison avec la plaque de fixation supérieure.
