ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of and compositions for accelerating the setting time of portland cement compositions are disclosed. Hydroxyacetic acid and its sodium, potassium, calcium, lithium, zinc, and tri- ethanolamine salts; lactic acid and its sodium, potassium, and calcium salts, sodium dl-mandelate; and sodium 2-methyllactate in particular ranges of concentrations relative to the cement are em- ployed as accelerators for certain applications. The concentration of admixture relative to cement necessary to achieve acceleration depends upon the identity of the admixture, the water-cement ratio, and the amount and type of aggregate in the composition, among other factors. The accelerators are especially useful in shotcrete applications.
