An adsorptive monolith made by extruding a mixture of activated carbon, a ceramic forming material, a flux material, and water, drying the extruded monolith, and firing the dried monolith at a temperature and for a time period sufficient to react the ceramic material together and form a ceramic matrix. The extrudable mixture may also comprise a wet binder. The monolith has a shape with at least one passage therethrough and desirably has a plurality of passages therethrough to form a honeycomb. The monolith may be dried by vacuum drying, freeze drying, or control humidity drying. The monolith is useful for removing volatile organic compounds and other chemical agents such as ozone from fluid streams. Particularly useful applications include adsorptive filters for removing ozone from xerographic devices and other appropriate office machines and volatile organic compounds from automobile engine air intake systems.

L'invention concerne un monolithe adsorbant que l'on fabrique en extrudant un mélange de charbon actif, d'une substance formatrice de céramique, d'une substance fluide, et d'eau. On sèche ensuite ce monolithe extrudé puis on cuit le monolithe séché ainsi obtenu à une température et pendant un laps de temps suffisants pour faire réagir la substance céramique et ainsi former une matrice en céramique. Le mélange extrudable peut également contenir un liant en émulsion. Ce monolithe se présente sous une forme dans laquelle est ménagé au moins un passage, ce qui permet de former une alvéole. Ce monolithe, qui peut être séché par séchage à vide, lyophilisation, ou séchage à humidité régulée, est en outre utilisé pour éliminer des composés organiques volatils et d'autres agents chimiques, par exemple de l'ozone devant être éliminée de courants de fluides. Enfin, ce monolithe est particulièrement utile dans des filtres adsorbants permettant d'éliminer l'ozone de dispositifs xérographiques et d'autres machines de bureau, ainsi que des composés organiques volatils contenus dans les systèmes d'admission d'air de moteurs automobiles.
