A floor covering having a modifiable electronic display is disclosed. The floor covering includes a base defining a recess where the electronic display is disposed, and a transparent insert removably disposed within the recess such that the electronic display is disclosed between the base and the transparent insert. The electronic display can include a~ liquid crystal display, liquid-emitting polymers, OLED, electronic ink and electric paper for displaying text and graphics, and configurable by a computer either through direct or wireless communication. The transparent insert can include an anti-slip component or a tacky surface to prevent slippage by a person when the transparent portion is wet.
