The present invention is concerned with an exposure apparatus comprises a visual target that reflects or transmits a stable value of light, by suppressing the color and density variables to achieve a chromatically neutral reproduction and an exposure accurate capture of images by any image capturing device such as a photographic camera under any exposure condition. A user of such a device may be informed of the accuracy of the device settings by means of a histogram of an image including the target, thereby enabling proper adjustment of settings at that time. Failing to adjust settings at the moment of image capture, the user may use the information carried by the image of the target to perform further adjustment using most of image editing software. The apparatus comprises a visual target having two areas that reflect high amounts of light without being equal, thus allowing a user to judge the discrimination of the device and it's ability to properly record this high level of light, combined with a chromatically neutral area of 18% grey that will suppress the effects of color temperature variations in achieving accurate neutral reproduction. The invention is further concerned with a method of using the apparatus for color and white balance setting.
