A hand-held aerator useful for removing soil to facilitate the passage of water, air, and nutrients is disclosed. It comprises a base plate (14), a handle (12) and a plurality of hollow tynes (28). The handle (12) is connected to the base plate (14) by means of a bracket (16), with a first portion (34) of the bracket contacting the upper surface of the base plate (14), and a second portion (36) of the bracket contacting the lower surface of the base plate (14).
