Sy-0 is a late-flowering Arabidopsis ecotype. Genetic analysis has revealed the requirement of dominant alleles at four loci for the establishment of flowering in Sy-0. These have been identified as FRI, FLC, and two novel flowering loci designated ARTI and ART2 (Aerial Rosette 1 and 2). FRI and FLC are repressors of flowering previously identified from late- flowering Arabidopsis accessions. FRI is an activator of FLC expression. The present invention provides genetic identification and use information for ART1 and ART2. Genetic interaction studies show that ART1 and its enhancer ART2 activate FLC to repress flowering through a pathway that is independent of FRI, and independent of the autonomous and vernalization pathways. Thus, ART1 and ART2 delineate a novel flowering sub-pathway that interacts with the FRI-activated pathway at or upstream of FLC. ART1 has been localized to a l5kb genomic region and maps l4cM proximal to FLC on chromosome V.
