An orthodontic bracket (10) has a load bearing framework (14, 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d) embedded in a plastic body (12). The framework (14, 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d) includes archwire-engaging end portions (36, 38) that are coplanar with a lingual side of an archwire slot (20). The end portions (36, 38) faciliate control of movement of the bracket and the associated tooth. A buccolabial surface of the bracket is roughened to enhance aesthetics.
