A small, portable safe for the storage of valuables includes a main safe housing having an access hole with a peripheral edge and connector openings extending into this edge. Each opening has a lateral bayonet-shaped notch at the bottom thereof. A circular cover to close the access hole has tabs distributed about its periphery on the inside of the cover. These tabs are insertable into respective ones of the openings, after which the cover is rotated to locate the tabs in the notches. Bramah locks are mounted in the housing, each with a latch movable into a respective one of the openings in order to prevent the tab from being extracted from the notch. A second version has a circular mounting plate with an upwardly extending short flange extending about its periphery. This plate has a central opening to accommodate a mechanism for securing the safe housing to the mounting plate.
