The invention provides for an electrical ignition device for an afterburner, in particular for an afterburner associated with a solid oxide fuel cell system (SOFC). SOFC afterburners experience very high temperatures and conventional sparking devices such as spark plugs and glow plugs have been found to rapidly fail at such elevated temperatures. Further, convention gap type sparking devices have been found to create excessive electrical noise when used in the afterburner assembly. This invention provides an ignition device that can withstand such extreme temperatures and does not create undesired electrical noise. Coiled electrical heating wires are contained within an outer shroud that is sealed with a heat resistant paste. Electrical power leads supply current to the electrical heating wires from an external power source. In an alternative embodiment the coiled electrical heating wires are replaced with a metal laminate heating element.
