A method is provided for isolating and processing certain information- of-interest received by a receiver in a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) communications system having a receiver and a transmitter. The information- of-interest is transmitted at predetermined intervals. The receiver receives a transmission of signals containing the information-of-interest transmitted from the transmitter. The start of the transmission is sensed from the received signals. The receiver isolates signals received after a predetermined period elapses after the start of the transmission is sensed so as to include the information-of-interest in the isolated signals. Then, the isolated signals including the information-of-interest are processed. In the preferred embodiment, the receiver automatically controls the gain of an amplifier amplifying the received signals in response to the signal power of the received signals. Automatic gain control values of the amplifier are sampled for a predetermined period after the start of the transmission is sensed. A fixed automatic gain control value is determined in response to the sampled automatic gain control values, and the receiver holes the automatic gain control value at the fixed value after the predetermined period elapses until the transmission ofthe information-of-interest ends. Furthermore, the receiver digitizes the received signals, and tags the digitized signals which were digitized from signals received before the start of the transmission is sensed to ignore the tagged signals in processing the information-of-interest.
