ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel chromogens are provided useful in diagnostic agents for the detection of leukocytes in body fluids; the chromogen is an azo dyestuff ester of the formula (I): A-N=N-B(OR)n in which A is a five- or six-membered heterocyclic ring, optionally benzoannelated radical, containing one or two hetero atoms selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, which radical A is unsubstituted or substituted one or more times by at least one of halogen, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy, or A is a phenyl radical substituted one to three times by at least one of lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, nitro, sulphonato and acylamino; B is an aromatic radical selected from the group consisting of benzene, naphthalene and quinoline radicals, said aromatic radical being unsubstituted or substituted once or twice by at least one of sulphonato, lower alkoxy and lower alkoxypolyalkyleneoxy; R is a carboxylic acid residue or an amino acid or peptide residue provided with a nitrogen protective group; and n is 1 or 2; the dia- gnostic agents comprise an absorbent carrier containing the chromogen and a buffer.
