The present invention provides agents for inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells, wherein the agent inhibits the biological activity of hCAP18/LL- 37. In a preferred embodiment, the agent alters the transcription, translation and/or binding properties of hCAP18/LL-37. Preferably, the agent is selected from the group consisting of short interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules, antisense oligonucleotides and compounds with binding affinity for hCAP18/LL- 37. The invention further provides methods for inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells in a patient, as well as methods and kits for diagnosing cancer.

La présente invention se rapporte à des agents permettant d'inhiber la prolifération de cellules cancéreuses, ledit agent inhibant l'activité biologique de hCAP18/LL-37. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, l'agent modifie les propriétés de transcription, de translation et/ou de liaison de hCAP18/LL-37. L'agent selon l'invention est de préférence sélectionné dans le groupe constitué de molécules de petit ARN interférent (petit ARNi), d'oligonucléotides antisens et de composés présentant une affinité de liaison pour hCAP18/LL-37. L'invention a également trait à des méthodes destinées à inhiber la prolifération de cellules cancéreuses chez un patient, ainsi qu'à des méthodes et à des kits permettant de diagnostiquer un cancer.
