A process is provided for the selective aggregation of the fine and ultrafine particles present in an anionically or cationically dispersed mineral pigment slurry, such that an aggregated structure is formed which contains within it a labyrinth of internal voids or pores, which collectively function as light scattering centers. The aggregates are formed from an assemblage of fine mineral particles, interconnected or bonded together with small quantities of a cationic or anionic polymer or agent of low molecular weight. The resultant aggregates are of larger mean particle size than the feed material and contain little or no fine and colloidal particles. The net charge present on the aggregated particles is lower than that of the feed material. These mineral aggregates are then of a suitable size and surface charge to be retained well in a fiber web by a combination of filtration retention and adsorption retention, and provide added bulk and opacity to the finished sheet of paper. The high solids, aggregated, products of this invention can also be used to enhance the optical properties, smoothness, printing properties and surface coverage of coated paper and paper board.
Procédé permettant l'agrégation sélective des particules fines et ultrafines présentes dans une boue de pigment minéral dispersé de manière anionique ou cationique, de sorte qu'une structure agrégée est formée dans laquelle se trouve un labyrinthe de vides ou de pores internes, qui collectivement jouent le rôle de centres de diffusion de la lumière. Les agrégats sont formés d'un assemblage de fines particules minérales, interreliées ou liées ensemble au moyen de petites quantités d'un polymère anionique ou cationique ou d'un agent de faible poids moléculaire. Les agrégats qui en résultent ont une granulométrie moyenne plus grande que la substance d'alimentation et renferment peu ou pas de particules fines ou colloïdales. La charge nette présente dans les particules agrégées est inférieure à celle de la substance d'alimentation. Ces agrégats minéraux ont alors la dimension appropriée et la charge surfacique pour être bien retenus dans une bande pour la fibre par une combinaison de rétention par filtration et de rétention par adsorption et donnent davantage de bouffant et d'opacité à la feuille de papier apprêtée. Les produits à haute teneur en solides sous forme d'agrégats propres à la présente invention peuvent aussi être utilisés pour améliorer les propriétés optiques, le lissé, l'imprimabilité et la superficie couverte du papier couché et du carton.
