ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for transmitting signals having a bit-rate higher than a predetermined base bit-rate in a digital data transmission system normally providing discrete data channels having a predetermined base bit-rate, the channels being subject to different propagation delay characteristics through the system. The method comprises allocating a group of C0...Cn-1 the predetermined bit-rate data channels as a virtual channel for the transmission of said high bit-rate signals, one of the channels Cm having a free bit position not required for transmitting data, dividing the high bit-rate signals into n sub-signals having a bit-rate equal to or less than the predetermined bit-rate, transmitting the n sub-signals over the n data channels, transmitting delay calibration signals at intervals over the data channels, the delay calibration signals being transmitted by inserting respective individual bits thereof on a rotational basis into said data channels. Each bit of the delay calibration signals is inserted in the free bit position of channel Cm or in data bit positions of the other n-1 channels, the data bit that would normally be sent in a bit position occupied by a data calibration bit being sent in said free bit position of said channel Cm while its bit position is occupied by a data calibration bit. The delay calibration signals at the far end to reassemble are used to reassemble the n subsignals into the original high bit-rate data signal.
