ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to novel aglycones of dauno- mycinone which are useful for the preparation of a new class of daunomycin derivatives which are useful in treating certain mammalian tumors. The aglycones are of the formula II: Image (II) wherein R is a lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Processes for the preparation of these compounds are also disclosed.
