2093140 9302894 PCTABS00019 An air bag safety device (132) comprises a reservoir of pressurized fluid (153) having an outlet, an inflatable air bag (127) having an inlet, and a frangible plate (172) interposed between the outlet of the reservoir (153) and the inlet of the air bag (127). A collision sensing means generates a signal in response to a collision, causing a striking member (162) to advance and shatter the frangible plate (172), whereupon pressurized fluid flows rapidly from the reservoir (153) to the air bag (127). A filter (177, 179) is generally annularly disposed about the striking member (162) to catch fragments of the frangible plate (172).
