A vacuum cleaner includes a cyclone separator and an electrostatic precipitator downstream of the cyclone separator in the air flow path through the vacuum cleaner. The electrostatic precipitator includes a washable filter element enclosed in a housing that is removable from the vacuum cleaner as a unit. The housing protects a user from contact with the dirty filter element and has water inlet and outlet openings through which water can be directed to flush dirt from the filter element.
